Kanda Batata Poha

Indian breakfast with flattened rice, onions, spices, herbs, lime juice, and peanuts.

🥘 Ingredients

Prep the Poha

  • poha (135g, medium or thick flakes)
    1.5 c
  • salt (2g)
    1/3 tsp
  • sugar (2g)
    1/2 tsp

Cook the Poha

  • coriander leaves (chopped)
    2 tbsp
  • cumin seeds (2g)
    3/4 tsp
  • curry leaves
    1 sprig
  • green chilies (chopped)
    2 pieces
  • hing
    1 pinch
  • lime juice (to taste)
    1 tsp
  • mustard seeds (2g)
    3/4 tsp
  • oil (22ml)
    1.5 tbsp
  • onion (finely chopped)
    1 medium
  • peanuts (45g)
    3 tbsp
  • poha
  • potato (cubed to 1/2")
    1 medium
  • turmeric (0.5g)
    1/4 tsp

Prep the Poha

    Add poha to a large strainer or bowl. Pour 4 to 5 cups of water and rinse. Drain the water completely. Then repeat the rinse, and drain again completely.
    poha: 1.5 c (135g, medium or thick flakes)

    Cover and set aside to soften for ⏱️ 5 minutes .

    Press a few flakes of poha between your thumb and forefinger to ensure they are soft and break easily. If they are not soft, sprinkle a little water, mix, and cover.

    When they turn soft enough, add salt and sugar . Run your fingers through the poha to break any lumps and evenly spread the salt and sugar.
    salt: 1/3 tsp (2g), sugar: 1/2 tsp (2g)

Cook the Poha

    Heat oil in a pan on medium heat. Fry peanuts until golden and crunchy, then remove the peanuts to a plate and set aside.
    oil: 1.5 tbsp (22ml), peanuts: 3 tbsp (45g)

    To the same pan, add mustard seeds and cumin seeds .
    mustard seeds: 3/4 tsp (2g), cumin seeds: 3/4 tsp (2g)

    When they begin to pop, add hing , onion , curry leaves , and green chilies . Saute until the onions turn lightly pink.
    hing: 1 pinch, onion: 1 medium (finely chopped), curry leaves: 1 sprig, green chilies: 2 pieces (chopped)

    Add potato and saute for ⏱️ 1 minute . Cover and cook on a low heat for ⏱️ 5 minutes until soft and completely cooked.
    potato: 1 medium (cubed to 1/2")

    Add turmeric and the reserved poha . Mix well and cover the pan.
    turmeric: 1/4 tsp (0.5g), poha

    Cook on a very low heat for ⏱️ 3 minutes until it turns hot. If the poha feels too dry, sprinkle a small amount of water and continue to steam.

    Turn off the heat. Squeeze in lime juice , then garnish with coriander leaves and the fried peanuts . Serve hot.
